What I’m Watching is a casual check-in where I share the shows I’m currently loving, rewatching, or catching up on. No deep reviews—just cozy thoughts, favorites, and a little TV chatter from my corner of midlife.
Possible Spoilers Ahead
Growing Up With TV (and Loving It Still)
Growing up in the 80s was a different time. Of course, we were outside playing all the time, but I was also a total TV addict. I had my shows that I loved, and I was right there every week, ready to watch. As an adult, I never would have imagined how we’d eventually watch programs and movies. I fully enjoy the luxury of streaming now—and I enjoy it thoroughly.
My All-Time Comfort Show: Gilmore Girls
My all-time favorite show is Gilmore Girls. I’m an OG Gilmore Girl and watched it from the very first episode. I own all seven seasons on DVD (I know, I’m old), and now I “watch” it pretty much every night to fall asleep. It’s more background noise than anything, but it’s comforting. I watched it during my pregnancy with my youngest, and when we were in the hospital, it actually calmed the baby down. My husband thought it was crazy, but over time it became an evening staple in our home. I could go on and on about this show, but that’s for another day.
A Longtime Favorite: NCIS
My second favorite show would have to be NCIS. I started watching a few seasons in and would catch earlier reruns on TV whenever I could. I think I officially started watching weekly around season six or seven, though I can’t quite remember now. I’ve since watched every episode and still tune in weekly. With every character change, I’d throw a small fit to my hubby—watching the new episodes in protest—only to come out the other side still a true fan. I’m really interested to see how things pick up after the current season break.
Current Favorites I’m Loving Right Now
Some of my current favorites include High Potential, Will Trent, Elsbeth, Matlock, and The Rookie.
I absolutely adore High Potential. I love all the characters, with the exception of the captain in the current season. Although, as I write this, I’m wondering if I’ll end up loving that character too. Even though I already know who I want Morgan to start dating (and yes, it might be a conflict of interest), I could definitely see it happening. The writers are clearly setting it up as a possibility—especially after the newest episode.
Will Trent just started a new season this week, and I already love it. I’m really curious to see how this season will play out and whether Will will finally find some happiness in his life.
Elsbeth is such a fun and quirky show, full of colorful characters. I enjoy it because even though it’s about crime and solving cases, it’s not dark or heavy. I can watch it without feeling anxious afterward, which I appreciate. I’m looking forward to it coming back for the second half of the season.
The new Matlock with Kathy Bates is amazing. I’ve enjoyed all the twists and turns throughout the first season and into season two. I can’t stand when networks put these long breaks in the middle of a season—I know they’ve done it forever, but it’s still annoying. That’s definitely a “me” thing; I’m a bit impatient. I like where season two seems to be headed, but I’m not sure how long the series can realistically go once the main objective of the Matlock character is accomplished. I’m hopeful the writers can give it continued purpose, but only time will tell.
The Show I Can’t Stop Rewatching: The Rookie
And then there’s The Rookie. Oh my gosh, I love this show so, so much. I was hesitant to start it at first, and I don’t know why now, because once I did, I was hooked almost immediately. I’ve rewatched it a few times, and this last run-through was with my husband and my father-in-law while he was visiting us. I loved that we were able to share this show together.
I’m absolutely a Chenford (Chen-Bradford) fan. I had a feeling something would happen between them, and it was exciting to watch their relationship evolve. I am not a fan of Nolan and Bailey, though. There’s just something about Bailey that annoys me. I could honestly write a whole post about how much I dislike this character, but I know plenty of people adore her—and this is supposed to be a quick blurb. I was dreading the first episode of the newest season, but it was better than I expected, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this season unfolds. Maybe I should do weekly updates…
Other Shows Worth Mentioning
I’ve also watched some great series over the past year, including The Gilded Age, Poldark, The Resident, a rewatch of Peaky Blinders for me (new for my husband), and my most current obsession, The West Wing, just to name a few. I’ve watched a ton more, but I promise I don’t only watch TV. I just really love it—entertainment that lets me escape real life for a little while.
